Pet Insurance So Good, It's Sharable
Are a Dog or Cat’s Pre-Existing Conditions Covered by Pet Insurance?
Pre-existing conditions are defined as pet injuries or illnesses that first occurred before your pet was covered by any dog or cat insurance. Most pet insurance providers don’t offer coverage for pre-existing conditions, while others only cover those that are defined as having a cure. But with AKC Pet Insurance, you will have coverage for pre-existing conditions after 365 days of continuous coverage. AKC Pet Insurance covers a broad range of pre-existing conditions, more than any other pet insurance provider. Pre-existing conditions are not covered in all states, and policyholders can find additional information by reviewing the terms and conditions of their specific policy.
What Are Waiting Periods and How Long Are They?
A waiting period is the amount of time that must elapse before certain claims are covered.
New policyholders are subject to the following waiting periods*:
- Accidents: 2 days
- Illnesses: 14 days
- Hereditary and Congenital Conditions: 30 days**
- Cruciate Ligament Injuries and Intervertebral Disc Disease: 180 Days
- Pre-existing Conditions: 365 days
*Waiting periods vary by state. **Available with Hereditary & Chronic Conditions Coverage add-on.
Is Pet Wellness Coverage Offered?
Yes. AKC Pet Insurance offers Wellness and Enhanced Wellness Coverage for an extra monthly fee. Both wellness plans offer reimbursement for a range of routine and preventive expenses, including vaccinations, flea and tick prevention, and annual wellness exams for dogs and cats. Enhanced Wellness also covers additional services, including dental cleaning and spay/neuter procedures. When you sign up for Wellness or Enhanced Wellness coverage, you will be given a schedule of your pet's benefits -- this allows AKC Pet Insurance to allocate a specific amount of funds toward each potential expense for the upcoming year of pet insurance coverage. Wellness plans are not subject to deductibles, so policyholders are not responsible for any coinsurance payments, only the amount remaining after their reimbursement.
Are My Pet’s Veterinary Exam Costs Covered?
Policyholders have the option to select Exam Coverage during the enrollment process. For an extra monthly fee, this add-on offers reimbursement for examinations from primary care physicians, specialists, and emergency clinics.
Is My Dog or Cat’s Dental Care Covered?
Yes. AKC Pet Insurance’s Basic Accident and Illness Coverage offers reimbursement for extractions of broken permanent teeth due to accidents. Policyholders can also select optional Enhanced Wellness coverage for an extra monthly fee, which offers reimbursement on annual dental cleanings for dogs and cats.
-
Does AKC Pet Insurance Require a Deductible?
Yes. All policyholders are responsible for paying an annual deductible before their pet’s coverage will take effect. During the enrollment process, policyholders typically have the option to select their own deductible ranging from $100 to $1000. Only eligible expenses count toward this deductible.
-
How Does Pet Insurance Reimbursement Work?
Pet Insurance follows a reimbursement model, meaning that policyholders pay their veterinarian directly, submit a claim, and are reimbursed for a portion of eligible costs.
-
Will Aging Affect My Pet’s Coverage?
No. As long as policyholders continually pay their premiums, their pet’s coverage will not lapse or change as they age (though rates may change and state-related coverage updates may occur).
-
Are Pet Burial and Pet Cremation Covered?
Policyholders with a pet under the age of five may opt for our supplemental Final Expense add-on, which will cover end-of-life expenses, including cremation, burial, and necropsy. Final Expense coverage is not currently available in all 50 states.
-
Are My Pet’s Inherited or Congenital Conditions Covered by Pet Insurance?
Yes. AKC Pet Insurance offers coverage for inherited illnesses and congenital conditions through the Hereditary and Chronic Conditions add-on. This option provides reimbursement for a range of common conditions like heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, and luxating patella.
-
Is My Pet Covered by Pet Insurance While Traveling?
Yes. AKC Pet Insurance offers coverage while traveling if treatment occurs within the United States and Canada.
-
Are Breeding Costs Covered?
AKC Pet Insurance does cover breeding expenses when you opt for Breeding Coverage at the time of enrollment. To learn more, call AKC Pet Insurance at 1-866-725-2747.
-
Are Elective Veterinary Procedures Covered by Pet Insurance?
AKC Pet Insurance does not cover elective procedures for cats or dogs. Experimental procedures are also not covered.
-
Are Cruciate Ligament Injuries Covered?
AKC Pet Insurance offers coverage for cruciate ligament conditions in dogs and cats with our Basic Accident and Illness policy. However, this coverage is subject to a 180-day waiting period.
